Asian Handicap
The Asian Handicap (AH) is a handicap betting market that gives one team a virtual head start — measured in goals — to balance an unequal matchup. Unlike European handicap betting, the draw is eliminated entirely: stakes are refunded on whole-goal handicaps and split on quarter-goal lines.
How Asian Handicap lines settle
Examples: "Liverpool -1.5" wins if Liverpool win by 2 or more goals. "Liverpool -1.0" wins if Liverpool win by 2+, refunds if Liverpool win by 1, and loses otherwise. "Liverpool -0.25" splits your stake — half on Liverpool to win straight, half on Liverpool draw-no-bet.
Quarter lines (-0.25, -0.75, -1.25) always split the stake across the two adjacent half lines, which softens variance.
Why AH offers better value than 1X2
Asian handicaps are popular because they reduce variance and offer better value than the 1X2 market in mismatched fixtures. Bookmaker margins on AH markets are also typically lower (often 102–104%) than on 1X2 markets (105–110%).
Our model produces an expected goal margin for every match, making it easy to identify which AH lines have positive expected value.
Frequently asked questions
What does -0.5 mean in Asian Handicap?
+
A -0.5 handicap means the team must win outright. A draw or loss settles the bet as a loss. This is functionally identical to a "Win" bet in the 1X2 market.
What is the difference between Asian and European handicap?
+
European handicaps treat the draw as a separate outcome (you can bet 1X, X, X2 with a handicap applied). Asian handicaps eliminate the draw — stakes are refunded or split instead.
