Expected Goals Against (xGA)

Expected Goals Against (xGA) is the defensive mirror of xG: the total expected goals from every shot a team has conceded. xGA measures the *quality* of chances given up, not just the count, making it the single best metric for evaluating defensive performance.

Why xGA predicts future defensive form

xGA is one of the strongest predictors of future goals conceded. A team with low xGA but a poor goals-against record is conceding to bad luck or hot-streak finishing — and is due for positive regression. A team with a great defensive record but high xGA is over-performing and will likely concede more.

How Final3rd uses xGA

Our model treats each team's xGA as their true defensive strength, factoring it into every match prediction, BTTS calculation, and player projection. When a high-xGA defence faces a clinical attack, the model will lean towards over-the-line goal markets even if recent results suggest otherwise.
