A key pass is any completed pass that immediately precedes a shot — whether the shot is scored, saved, or missed. Key passes are the broadest measure of chance creation in football and are sometimes labelled "chances created" in stat tables.

Key passes per 90 minutes is one of the most reliable indicators of a creative midfielder or winger. Combined with xA, you can separate volume from quality: a player creating many shots from distance posts high key passes but low xA, while a player threading through-balls posts moderate key passes and high xA.
